BRAZILIAN STREET STYLE
May 15, 2012
One of the things about the rise of fashion blogs is it’s much easier now to see what’s being worn on the other side of the world and take inspiration from different places/people.
Whenever I see street photography, I think of blogs like Pieces of Berlin and articles like Vice’s recent one, ‘What is street?’. It’s much more interesting when there’s a backstory or some humour. But I suppose fashion is largely about aesthetics, and it turns out Brazil’s teeming with street style. I’ve never been there but really want to (2013 is the year!)

NO FRILLS
May 9, 2012
…Or lots of frills rather?! We’re having slightly warmer weather again in Berlin so everyone’s smiling at each other again. I love Berlin for that, it might get really cold in the winter but when it gets warm you know about it and people appreciate it that little bit more.
There’s very few things I miss from the UK now, namely my friends, family and possibly some of the tv shows and food. But people are visiting all the time and sending certain foods over for me so… alles wird gut!

JENIVIEVE BERLIN
May 7, 2012
Jenivieve is an avant-garde milliner who takes her inspiration from everyone’s favourite ‘arm aber sexy’ city and its art scene. I recently interviewed her for Brighton Fashion Week as she’s exhibiting there this year. Most of the collection is being kept secret until the show, but Jenni has let me premier one of the pieces.

Q&A WITH SERVULLO MENDEZ
May 5, 2012
Here’s some photos and a very quick Q&A I did with Servullo Mendez for Frockazine, a fashion slash music slash photography zine based in Vienna.
Servullo Mendez is a Berlin-based make-up artist who designs and applies the make-up for advertisements, editorials and fashion shoots. His work ranges from more muted natural looks to carnivals of colour and high drama.

How did you become a make-up artist?
How would you describe your work?
My work is a personal interpretation of each person’s spirit; make up for me is not a pre made stencil, it has to make the person I am touching shine in all aspects.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The contact with the beauty of humanity, the creativity and the travels of course.
DAISY CHAIN
April 29, 2012
We had such warm weather in Berlin this weekend and I spent both days outside sunbathing. I’m now looking forward to the excitement of May 1st, with the open-air parties and street celebrations. Yesterday the 28 degree heat meant that a sun dress felt like the most appropriate option, so out came my daisy print dress, along with my quintessential “summer” handbag, tan belt, sandals and oversized shirt.

WRITTEN IN THE STARS
April 22, 2012
I’ve barely added to my wardrobe since I moved to Berlin, instead becoming really good at making new outfits with the things I have. No matter how great I get at this though, I’m always going to want something NEW every now and then. So after feeling pretty bored of wearing the same bag every day and night, I got a tote handbag and a cross body bag. I also love shirts at the moment, they’re so comfortable and easy, and kind of feel like wearing your boyfriend’s clothes, in a good way… and the fact I’m pretty obsessed with astrology clearly means me and this shirt were fated to be together. Of course, I’m selling a few items on ebay at the moment to make room for even more new things!

DESIGNER SCOUTS
April 21, 2012
I went to a Designer Scouts event in Kreuzberg yesterday evening and wanted to share some of my photos. They were showcasing some of Berlin’s most creative, avant-garde designers in a space I’d only previously known as a nightclub – so that was a little strange.
The first thing I saw on walking in was three very striking models made-up like ghouls and dressed in floor-length black gowns, fur and beads. This was the work of fashion label Moga e Mago. I love the accessories, which are so elegant, bold and edgy all at once.

There were some beautiful glossy photographs on one of the walls, one stand-out shot each from seven chosen designers’ work. One of these designers, Isabel Vollrath, was also displaying some unusual pieces, most notably a jacket made from ballet shoes and a feather head-dress.
A DJ was playing some minimal, vocal techno turned up pretty loud and there were Haribo sweets on little plates. As with every gallery exhibition like this, cocktails were on sale and smoking was allowed. There was even a cute little dog who came along to enjoy the show!
ANDREW HUANG’S SOLIPSIST
April 20, 2012
Another piece I wrote for the launch of the delectable 125 Magazine was this review of ‘Solipsist – Making of’. Andrew Huang’s short film is a visually stunning piece that, in its mere ten minutes, manages to be a very intense, dreamlike experience. The making of it, the story behind it all, is just as interesting as the feature.

Behind-the-scenes action is so often more fascinating than the real thing, especially to the enquiring, artistic mind. Solipsist – Making Of, is of particular interest to anyone into visual media.
The fact that Solipsism is a philosophical theory which suggests that one’s mind is the only thing that is certain to exist goes some way to uncovering the meaning behind the film. Huang has said that he tried to achieve the opposite of this – with people sharing their physicalities, experiences and consciousness with each other to create unisons of mind and body as opposed to division. At one moment, two women sit back-to-back rocking forwards and backwards while stunningly bright marine plant life grows over them, eventually submerging them. The next minute sea creatures dance, spark and bleep at each other as if communicating through electric shocks. Later still, the heads and torsos of painted-faced men give way and clouds of smoke in rainbow hues make for a dramatic crescendo of colour. In Solipsist, Huang has created a visual-musical masterpiece.
Watch the ‘making of’ for a shorter piece which just as captivating and inspiring as the feature. Huang takes us on a journey in which we see people controlling underwater puppets, pouring sand through gaps and pulling huge colourful garlands over the girls’ bodies and other ‘human’ efforts – but much of Solipsist has been digitally composed and animated and it’s amazing to watch the sea puppets and animations while gaining an insight into the work, expertise and creativity that went into this exceptional film.

ANDRE UERBA
April 18, 2012
I’ve written quite a few things for various publications recently, so I’ll be posting these here over the next few weeks I’m sure. I wrote something on André Uerba‘s photography and sculpture exhibition at Agora for 125 Magazine. There’s a brick-built water tower opposite the Agora building, and André’ had projected some footage of a cigarette lighter flame onto it which I thought looked really cool.
You can find the original article here, but these are my words in their entirety:
Art is often things put together in an imaginative and thought-provoking way. Take André Uerba’s off-the-wall photography, art installations and films. André is an artist who resides between Berlin, home to one of Europe’s most buzzing art scenes, and his birth city of Lisbon. His work ranges from projections emblazoned on hung-up jackets to an old dictionary turned into a round paper sculpture.
His latest exhibition ‘There is no longer a place to be’ resides in Agora, a Berlin-based co-working space. André was directed to produce all of his work onsite, thus able to use the space as his inspiration and be freed from the constraints of having to transport his work. Agora was the perfect setting, a beautiful brick building designed for collaborative and independent creative activity and exhibitions, and along with the studio and gallery space it boasts a cafe, bar and garden to boot.
This collection of photography from the exhibition features confusing and unconventional interactions with everyday and household objects such as clothing, carpets and mattresses. A man lies across the end of a sofa which is on its side, an arm is all that is visible beneath a mountain of clothes and bedding seems to cause difficulty as it obscures people from view, reminiscent of the physical difficulties of moving furnishings around and perhaps symbolic of more emotional struggles.
The photos were some of those displayed on one of the walls between symmetrical fortresses made from furniture. Upturned chairs rested on tables and a stepladder was balanced precariously on another. It is interesting to note that in their current positions, none of these items could be used as they were intended. Perhaps ‘There is no longer a place to be’ is a comment on the exasperation caused by the quirks of day-to-day life – communicated through simple items being transformed into puzzling, albeit orderly, structures.

BERLINER STIL
April 8, 2012
Berlin is a city where pretty much anything goes, and this is the case with fashion as well. You see so many diverse, unique looks here. But of course as with most cities, you can recognise a sort of homogenised, collective style. Originality and creativity is held dear to most people in the artistic hub of Europe, but that isn’t to say that you can’t look at someone’s dress sense and say “that’s typical Berlin style”. In winter and horrendously cold Aprils, there’s a lot of emphasis on hats, jackets, and boots or shoes during the day because the rest is generally covered up. If I had to sum up the effortlessly cool Berlin stlye I would say it’s all about making casual, ‘thrown together’, second-hand outfits look expensive and smart. Or is it the other way round?
