1. Make peace with your parents. Whether you finally recognize that they actually have your best interests in mind or you forgive them for being flawed human beings, you can’t happily enter adulthood with that familial brand of resentment.

2. Kiss someone you think is out of your league; kiss models and med students and entrepreneurs with part-time lives in Dubai and don’t worry about if they’re going to call you afterward.

I like this. I think 10 and 24 can wait though!

Daniel Brühl

Just as an aside, how perfect is Daniel Brühl from Goodbye Lenin and Inglourious Basterds? Apparently he owns a tapas restaurant in Berlin these days.

Berlin Festival 2012

September 22, 2012

Berlin Festival 2012 took place over a pretty grey, and at times rainy, Friday and Saturday on September 7-8. On arrival at Tempelhof, it was great to see the old check-in desks were manned once again as wristband exchange points, and people dressed as cabin crew milled around the festival site. There’s nothing like kitsch Flughafen-throwbacks to get you in the mood for a party in a former airport.

More photos and highlights after the jump.

I was recently invited to the Vogue Fashion Night Out event at Patrizia Pepe to celebrate the opening of the new flagship store on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm (Ku’damm or Qdamm if you’re into abbreviations). The street itself was an eye opener, I hadn’t been there before in my eight months in Berlin and it’s so impressive. It’s a wide and grand boulevard lined by (mostly chain) shops and looks really pretty at night time.

Patrizia Pepe’s collection is characterised by classic, simple shapes with some more interestingly elegant details – such as fur, metallics and lace. The DJ was playing soft minimal sounds, Rose wine flowed and the strawberries with chocolate was a nice touch as well! More photos after the cut…

Ok, it’s time to breathe some kind of life into this again. I pretty much stopped writing anything in my spare time when I started my new job. Everything I do at work is an exercise in written English (writing, creating names and tag-lines, advertising, press releases, translating, proofing, editing, blog, social media), so I feel that the last thing I want to do in my free time is more writing.

That, and Berlin summer is probably the best thing ever.

But alas, winter is (sort of) on its way and I want to start doing something here again so…

I’ll leave you for now with one of my favourite accessories, the circle scarf or snood. Probably everyone should own one. I’ve been fighting the urge to buy the American Apparel tie dye one in favour of something different. But fur or knit?

Refuel

July 3, 2012

The last few weeks have been filled with galleries, parks, swimming, singing, busking, party, bike rides through the Berlin streets, showing visiting friends around the city and shopping. But one thing that’s so important is enjoying time alone and having the chance to love your own company, so this is all about that. It’s a good feeling to be working again and this week is Berlin Fashion Week so there’s literally no rest for the wicked.

(The link is to a video of a poem by Tanya Davis, which I first saw on the wall at Myxa in Neukölln)

I love these paisley and scarf prints and floaty fabrics from Givenchy’s Resort/Pre-Spring 2013 lookbook. The cuts are similar to capes in that they’re quite voluminous and allow for free movement. The collection was inspired by the ‘travelling, nomadic woman’.

Although this shoot is obviously New York, before I noticed that tell-tale yellow taxi I was instantly reminded of the red brick buildings of Manchester’s Northern Quarter – it’s uncanny.

Festival fashion

June 19, 2012

Festival season is nearly upon us and there’s a big emphasis on ‘festival style’, I suppose since music and style go hand in hand, and festivals are seen as glamorous in some way (probably due to the celebrity attendance rather than camping in a muddy field and not washing properly for 5 days).

It’s difficult to pack for festivals because you can’t exactly take lots of things with you and yet you need to be prepared for all weather! I’ve been going to festivals every year for the last 8 years and this is the first time I haven’t had a festival planned as such, though I’m still hoping for something to fall in my lap somehow!

In any case, the summer calls for festival fashion whether you’re at one or not. Dip-dyed t-shirts, bumbags, grunge and 70s styles all the way.

Berlin Fashion Week

June 14, 2012

Berlin Fashion Week takes place on the first week of July, and there is a lot of exciting events popping up across the city.

I have been busy sorting out Q&As, meetings and press accreditation with some of the most interesting events and their organisers. Check der Tintenfisch for previews and features.

I’m most looking forward to the Berlin Fashion Film Festival and the (capsule) show – lots of exciting men’s and women’s brands and a pop-up book store from Do You Read Me.

For more information on all the events and shows, visit the Berlin Fashion Week website here.

Summer colours

June 12, 2012

Bright pastels like lemon, turquoise, lilac and orange remind me of ice cream cones and hundreds and thousands.

Louis Vuitton championed the pastels trend for Spring/Summer 2012 with sweet 50s style candy shades:

These would be my LV inspired choices from the high street and online shops…

Top: Ragged Priest

Shirt: Monki

Nikes: ASOS

Jeans: Topshop
